Behind the Build: Maximising the Potential of a Restomod Datsun 240Z

Restomods celebrate the past while embracing the best of modern engineering. The Datsun 240Z is a perfect candidate: classic lines on the outside with modern power and performance hidden beneath. One challenge produced by this blending of past and present, however, is managing heat.
Today’s advancements in technology mean re-engineered engines have far greater output than the originals whilst still being housed in the same compact shell. More power means more heat in that small engine bay, with every component now positioned closer to a greater heat source. Without management, that heat can damage bodywork and electronics, overheat fluids, sap performance and make the cabin rather toasty.
Upgrading What Was Already There
It’s worth remembering that cars like the 240Z weren’t built without any heat protection; many classics do feature some form of factory shielding. But those solutions were designed around the power levels and materials of the era. In a restomod, where every system is being elevated to modern standards, why wouldn’t the thermal management be upgraded as well? For this 240Z, that meant going beyond just insulating the exhaust and tackling the original one-layer heat barrier. We re-engineered it to house Formula 1 grade insulation within the same footprint, giving a like-for-like fit but with a huge leap in effectiveness; protecting critical components far better from the intense heat of a modern powertrain.

That’s why advanced thermal management is fundamental to a successful restomod. At Immico, our meticulous approach gives a solution that:
Protects carbon fibre bodywork from heat damage and discolouration
Shields wiring, ECUs, and sensors from thermal stress
Keep fluids cooler — fuel for more power, oils for reliability, damper fluids for consistent dynamics
Maintain cabin comfort for drivability without extra weight
Reduce heat soak so the engine can use that extra power for longer
In a project like the 240Z, the unseen details matter most. By controlling heat, you preserve the soul of the classic while utilising the performance of a modern machine.
